Why I Created Bolder: Adventures That Matter

The story behind Bolder - a journey from reflection to rediscovery, and the belief that adventure should build confidence, connection and perspective.

"The only way out is through." - Robert Frost

After more than a decade leading one of the UK’s largest school expedition providers through growth, crisis, and transformation, I thought I understood adventure education.

Then 2024 happened - a year that changed everything.

It was supposed to be a year of stability. Our team was rebuilding post-pandemic, the business was back on its feet, and I was finally coming up for air. Then came a cancer diagnosis. In an instant, all the things that had felt urgent - targets, schedules, meetings, spreadsheets - fell away.

What remained was simple: health, family, purpose.

Recovery gave me time to think, properly, about what really matters in life, in education, and in adventure. And what I realised was this: the industry I’d dedicated my career to was making adventure more complicated than it needed to be. We’d lost some of the fun and magic. Adventure was supposed to be about wonder, connection, and discovery - not admin, logistics, and stress.

When my daughter was born later that year - healthy, curious, full of joy - I knew exactly what I wanted to build for her generation. Something simpler. Something more human. Something that reminded people why we fell in love with adventure in the first place.

Adventure transforms young people. I’ve seen it thousands of times: the quiet student who becomes a leader halfway up a mountain, the nervous diver who surfaces beaming after her first descent, the laughter that binds a group of relative strangers into a team. Those moments are real - and they stay with you for life. But somewhere along the way, our race to become the most worthy and educational began to smother that authenticity.

Traditional school expeditions became heavy with complexity and costs - months of paperwork, high prices, rigid structures, layers of bureaucracy.

Teachers became passengers. Students became participants in programmes, rather than adventurers in the wild. What was meant to be liberating had become burdensome. I wanted to fix that.

Bolder was born from that belief - that adventure, done right, is one of the most powerful teachers there is. It builds confidence through challenge, resilience through uncertainty, and friendship through shared discovery.

And when it happens in spectacular wild places - reefs, rainforests, savannahs - it naturally inspires care for the planet that makes it all possible.

Our philosophy is simple: spectacular places, genuine friendships, real growth.

At Bolder, we’ve stripped back everything that doesn’t serve the experience. We make it as simple as possible for teachers, while giving back control and flexibility. We make it meaningful for students. We make it sustainable for the future.

That simplicity isn’t minimalism - it’s clarity. It’s removing friction so that adventure can do what it’s meant to do: challenge, excite, and connect.

Our Plan → Prepare → Go → Reflect framework keeps things structured without ever losing the spirit of discovery.

For teachers, it means less stress and more focus on what matters - guiding students through moments that will shape who they become. For students, it means authentic adventure in spectacular settings that stretch their comfort zones without overwhelming them. And for me, it means creating a company that delivers what I’ve always believed in: adventures and connections that actually matter.

I think back often to those long recovery walks during treatment - slow, careful steps in the hills around North Wales, where my world felt small but my clarity grew sharper. Adventure has a way of doing that. It strips life down to what’s essential. And that’s exactly what I want young people to experience: the feeling of discovering what they’re truly capable of when they step beyond the familiar.

Today, my daughter is learning to walk. She stumbles, tries again, and beams with pride when she makes it a few steps further. That’s what adventure is. A cycle of challenge, courage, and growth.

That’s what I want for her generation - and for every student who deserves to know that feeling.
