Field Notes: South Africa - Adventure with Purpose
From the savannahs of Kruger to the coast of Cape Town, discover how Bolder’s South Africa partnership combines adventure, purpose and perspective.
There are places in the world that don’t just host adventure - they define it. For me, South Africa is one of them.
It’s a country of contrasts: ancient landscapes and modern cities, raw wilderness and vibrant communities, deep challenges and fierce hope. Every time we speak with someone returning from a trip here, they use the same word - connection. Connection to nature. Connection to people. Connection to purpose. That’s exactly what Bolder’s partnership with Expedition Education, led by Duane Stacey, is designed to create.
A shared philosophy
When we first spoke, Duane and I realised we were approaching the same goal from different directions. He came from the classroom - fifteen years as a teacher in South Africa’s Reddam school network - before founding Expedition Education to make outdoor learning more meaningful. I came from the UK school expedition sector, determined to simplify and humanise adventure for teachers and students alike.
We both saw the same problem: too many school trips had lost their substance. They were either so complex that teachers were overwhelmed, or so shallow that students came home unchanged.
What Duane has built in South Africa is the antidote to that. His programmes blend adventure with reflection, conservation with leadership, and challenge with humanity. The result is something rare: an expedition that feels both thrilling and purposeful - without ever feeling contrived.
Kruger: where curiosity meets conservation
In the Kruger National Park, students step into one of the world’s most extraordinary classrooms.
They’re not just watching wildlife; they’re studying ecosystems alongside conservationists, learning how research and protection coexist in fragile balance.
Days often begin before sunrise - mist over the bushveld, camera traps waiting to be checked. At the Skukuza Science and Leadership Institute, students work in partnership with scientists and local guides to collect data, track movement, and understand the ripple effects of every footprint, hoofprint, and human choice.
These aren’t token activities. They’re real contributions to ongoing projects managed by South African National Parks and their partners. Students learn how leadership looks different in the field: sometimes quiet, sometimes bold, always grounded in awareness.
And somewhere between the dawn drives, conservation workshops, and bush-braai evenings under the stars, something subtle happens. The noise of everyday life fades. Phones stay at home. The digital world gives way to the real one.
Students start noticing more - the smell of the dust after rain, the rhythm of the cicadas, the way silence becomes a kind of conversation.
Beyond the park: connection through community
From Kruger, our groups often travel east to Eswatini, continuing their journey at the Savanna Research Centre near Mbuluzi Game Reserve. Here, the focus shifts from wildlife to people - exploring how conservation and community are intertwined.
Students meet local leaders, take part in workshops on sustainability and food security, and share lessons in conservation with schoolchildren from nearby villages. It’s humbling, and it brings the learning full circle: you can’t protect a place without understanding the people who call it home.
That mindset runs through everything Expedition Education does. The Explorer Mindset framework - curiosity, collaboration, empathy, empowerment - shapes student perspective, not just what they do. It’s leadership in its most authentic form: learned through doing, refined through reflection.
The strength of partnership
I’ve always believed that great partnerships are built on shared values, not just logistics. What makes our collaboration with Expedition Education so powerful is alignment - in purpose, in philosophy, and in the belief that adventure can be both simple and transformative.
Their teams know these landscapes intimately. They combine decades of field experience with a teacher’s understanding of learning, reflection, and care.
Our role at Bolder is to bring that excellence to UK schools - to make it accessible, supported, and available to teachers who want to offer their students something genuinely special. All underpinned by the financial protection and regulatory compliance demanded of UK operators.
Every detail, from risk assessments to reflection sessions, is handled with the same professionalism and empathy that define our own approach. It’s a partnership that blends local authenticity with international reliability - exactly the balance schools need.
Adventure that shapes perspective
When students return from South Africa, they never lead with what they did - they talk about what they felt. They describe standing quietly as the bush comes alive at dawn. They recall the laughter after setting up camp or the pride of discovering more about conservation efforts with Eswatini students.
They remember connection - to each other, to the land, to something bigger than themselves. That’s what we mean by adventure with purpose. It’s not a slogan. It’s the natural outcome of experiences that are immersive, reflective, and real.
When adventure happens in places that matter, led by people who care deeply about them, students return changed - not always in a grand, dramatic way, but in the quiet confidence of someone who has seen the world differently and realised they have a role within it.
A belief that binds us.
At its heart, this partnership is about shared belief: that young people learn best when learning is lived. South Africa offers that in abundance - vast landscapes, complex histories, resilient communities, and a sense of wonder that demands reflection.
That’s why Bolder and Expedition Education fit so naturally together.
We both believe in experiences that build courage, curiosity, and connection - the foundations not just of great adventures, but of great lives.
